Kyiv closed one of its main crossings over the Dnipro River on Tuesday, Oct. 27, after Russian missiles hit the Southern Bridge before dawn, according to the city’s mayor and military administration. Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported a hit on the Southern Bridge on Telegram at 5:04 a.m. Kyiv time (8:04 p.m. PT Monday); the metro infrastructure on the span took damage too, he added (Klitschko on Telegram). Minutes earlier, at 4:57 a.m., the Kyiv City Military Administration announced restricted traffic on the bridge (Kyiv City Military Administration). By 7:58 a.m., Klitschko wrote that specialists had started to assess the extent of the damage and that the bridge had closed to traffic (Klitschko on Telegram).

The bridge carries both road traffic and a section of the metro’s Green Line, Kyiv Post notes, which makes it a critical link between the capital’s two banks (Kyiv Post). Klitschko wrote that trains between the Osokorky and Chervonyi Khutir stations on the Green Line had stopped because of the hit on the metro infrastructure on the bridge, and that the city added buses to the surface routes between the left and right banks (Klitschko on Telegram). Kyiv Post writes: “There is currently no information on when the bridge will reopen to traffic or when metro service on this section of the line will resume.” (Kyiv Post).

The two official channels describe the Green Line slightly differently. The military administration’s notice, posted at 4:57 a.m., says trains run in two separate segments, Syrets to Vydubychi and Osokorky to Chervonyi Khutir (Kyiv City Military Administration). Klitschko’s posts at 7:05 a.m. and 7:58 a.m. say service between Osokorky and Chervonyi Khutir stopped (Klitschko on Telegram; Klitschko on Telegram). Ukrinform follows the mayor’s account; Kyiv Post cites the administration’s notice and later the mayor’s update on the closure (Ukrinform; Kyiv Post). Riders should check the city’s latest notice before travel.

The bridge strike came in a second wave. Around 3:58 a.m., Klitschko reported a hit on an administrative building in the Podilskyi district and on non-residential buildings at two other addresses (Klitschko on Telegram; Ukrinform). The first wave started Monday evening: the military administration declared a red-level air raid alert over a missile threat at 9:41 p.m. Kyiv time (12:41 p.m. PT), and Ukrinform reports that the Ukrainian Air Force warned of ballistic missiles launched from Russia’s Bryansk region (Kyiv City Military Administration; Ukrinform).

That evening wave hit homes, a campus and medical sites, according to the mayor’s running posts. Klitschko reported a hit near the dormitory of one of the city’s universities in the Desnianskyi district, which blew out the building’s windows, and an ambulance crew caught in the shelling on its way to a call; a paramedic and an emergency medical technician suffered injuries that he described, in preliminary terms, as non-critical, and the ambulance took damage too (Klitschko on Telegram; Klitschko on Telegram). In the Dniprovskyi district, the blast wave knocked out windows in the intensive care unit of one medical facility and in two departments of another, with no patients or staff hurt, he wrote (Klitschko on Telegram). The military administration also reported damage to a school building in the Desnianskyi district, Ukrinform reports (Ukrinform).

Watch: Monday night’s strike on the campus

Two Kyiv outlets posted video on X within minutes of the Monday evening wave. This desk has not frame-checked either clip. If an embed does not load, it shows as a plain link.

By 11:24 p.m. Monday, Klitschko counted one person dead and 10 injured, most of them students from the dormitory, with nine taken to hospital (Klitschko on Telegram). Ukrinform, citing police, reports that a 46-year-old woman died in the Desnianskyi district and that 13 people between 19 and 59 suffered injuries there, two members of an emergency medical team among them, while a 22-year-old man suffered injuries in the Obolon district (Ukrinform). Police listed damage to high-rise and private homes, medical facilities, a metro station, a university dormitory, a business center, an administrative building, trams and cars, according to the same report (Ukrinform).

The casualty totals differ by source and by hour. Klitschko’s 7:15 a.m. tally for the whole period since Monday evening gives one dead and 14 injured, nine of them hospitalized (Klitschko on Telegram). The military administration’s 8:30 a.m. summary gives one dead and 15 injured, 12 of them hospitalized, and lists damage in three districts: academic buildings, dormitories and high-rise homes in Desnianskyi, a fire in non-residential buildings in Obolonskyi that crews put out, and damaged transport infrastructure in Holosiivskyi (Kyiv City Military Administration). Ukrinform, in a later item, describes damage in six districts (Ukrinform). This desk reports the range and attributes each figure.

Moscow describes the bridge as a military target. Russia’s Defense Ministry says its forces struck the Southern road-and-rail bridge, which it says serves for transit shipments of military cargo by road and rail, according to Interfax (Interfax). RIA Novosti reports that the ministry also listed a plant, a drone workshop and a shop assembling FP-1 and FP-2 drones in Kyiv among the night’s targets (RIA Novosti). Seems News cannot verify those claims, and neither Russian report names a casualty.

Kyiv’s leaders reject that framing. President Volodymyr Zelensky wrote on Telegram, in a post the military administration shared, that the Monday missiles hit very crowded places, the campus, Kyoto Park, the area near a metro station and residential buildings, with no military site nearby, and he warned that artificial delays in air defense help the attackers, according to the post and to Ukrinform’s English summary (Kyiv City Military Administration (shared Zelensky post); Ukrinform). He asked partners for the tools to destroy Russian ballistic missile launchers, Ukrinform reports (Ukrinform).

The Southern Bridge has drawn fire before. Kyiv Post reports repeated Russian attacks on the crossing earlier in October, including strikes that damaged metro infrastructure and forced temporary suspensions of road and rail traffic (Kyiv Post). The Red Line, hit separately on Monday evening between Darnytsia and Chernihivska stations, reopened all its stations by morning after metro crews worked through the night, Klitschko wrote (Klitschko on Telegram). Neither the city nor Kyiv Post has given a reopening time for the bridge.
