Three outs from elimination, the Tampa Bay Rays scored twice in the bottom of the 12th inning on Tuesday night, Oct. 27, to beat the Milwaukee Brewers 4-3 at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Fla., and keep the World Series going. Pinch-hitter Ben Williamson ended the game with a bouncing single into right field that scored pinch-runner Nick Fortes, according to the Associated Press, MLB.com and the Baseball-Reference play-by-play (AP via NBC Sports; MLB.com; Baseball-Reference). Milwaukee, chasing its first World Series title, still leads the series 3-1, USA Today notes (USA Today). The game took four hours and 20 minutes before a crowd of 40,514, according to Baseball-Reference and the AP (Baseball-Reference; AP).
For a few minutes, the night belonged to Milwaukee. Cooper Pratt, a 22-year-old rookie shortstop, led off the top of the 12th by driving a 2-2 pitch from Rays reliever Ian Seymour into the seats for a 3-2 lead, his fourth hit of the game, the AP and MLB.com report (AP; MLB.com). MLB.com’s Anthony Castrovince describes thousands of Brewers fans in the stands erupting at the blast (MLB.com). After Jackson Chourio doubled with two outs, Seymour got Jake Bauers, the NL Championship Series MVP, to pop out and keep the deficit at one run (MLB.com; Baseball-Reference).
The bottom of the 12th then unfolded in a rush of singles. Junior Caminero led off with a grounder to third, and Ortiz’s long throw bounced in front of Bauers and off his glove for an error, according to MLB.com (MLB.com). Milwaukee replaced Antonio Senzatela with left-hander Shane Drohan, who, the AP reports, had not pitched since Oct. 15 (AP). Hicks singled to left, sending Caminero to third; Cedric Mullins ran for Caminero, who left limping, according to USA Today (USA Today; Baseball-Reference). DeLuca then singled up the middle to score Mullins and tie the game at 3, and Simpson’s single to center loaded the bases (Baseball-Reference; USA Today). With Milwaukee playing a five-man infield, Williamson, who had gone 1 for 15 in the postseason, according to the AP, hit a chopper over Bauers at first and into right field (AP).

The teams had traded runs early. Simpson’s run-scoring double off Brewers starter Dustin May gave Tampa Bay a 1-0 lead in the second inning, and Pratt answered with a two-out double that scored Sal Frelick in the fourth, according to the Baseball-Reference play-by-play and USA Today’s live coverage (Baseball-Reference; USA Today). In the bottom of the fourth, third baseman David Hamilton missed a tag on Caminero and then threw wide of first, letting Caminero score for a 2-1 Rays lead; Hamilton tied the game with a solo home run off Rays starter Griffin Jax leading off the fifth (MLB.com; USA Today; Baseball-Reference). From there, the game stayed tied at 2 into the 12th as both bullpens held (MLB.com).
Milwaukee’s Aaron Ashby added 2 1/3 scoreless innings and now has 18 straight scoreless innings this postseason, which MLB.com’s Sarah Langs lists as the longest run within a single postseason by a reliever, past Andrew Miller’s 16 in 2016 (MLB.com). On the Tampa Bay side, MLB.com reports that the Rays used Nick Martinez, their planned Game 5 starter, for two scoreless innings of relief (MLB.com). Chourio, who had two hits, has 10 in the series, which ties Babe Ruth in 1928 for the most in the first four games of a World Series, according to MLB.com (MLB.com; AP).
The win puts the Rays in rare company, by MLB.com’s count. Tampa Bay became the fifth team to force a World Series Game 5 after trailing 3-0, after the 2024 Yankees, the 1970 Reds, the 1937 Giants and the 1910 Cubs, none of whom forced a Game 6 (MLB.com). The AP frames the same history this way: the previous four teams to win Game 4 from that position all lost Game 5, and of 43 earlier teams to trail 3-0 in any best-of-seven postseason series, only the 2004 Boston Red Sox came back to win (AP). MLB.com also counts Tuesday’s result as the 17th walk-off win by a team facing elimination in World Series history, the first since David Freese’s for St. Louis in Game 6 in 2011, on the same date, Oct. 27, and only the second, after the 1910 Cubs, by a team facing a sweep (MLB.com).
The loss ended Milwaukee’s eight-game postseason winning streak, according to the AP; MLB.com adds that a sweep would have made the Brewers the first team to sweep both a best-of-seven League Championship Series and the World Series (AP; MLB.com). Pratt, according to MLB.com, became the first rookie to hit an extra-inning home run in a World Series and, citing the Elias Sports Bureau, the first rookie with four hits in a potential World Series clincher (MLB.com).
Players and managers spoke afterward about the swing in fortune. “We’ve got one more day,” said Seymour, who earned the win, according to MLB.com. “Now let’s make it two more days” (MLB.com). Williamson fouled a ball off his face a day earlier; on Tuesday, according to the site, he summed up the night this way: “Tonight,” he said, “good things happened” (MLB.com). Rays manager Kevin Cash said his team “pieced together a big inning, maybe the most important inning of our season,” according to MLB.com, and said of the injured Caminero after the game, “He'll play tomorrow with one leg. I'll make sure of it,” according to USA Today, which adds that Caminero’s condition remained unclear after the game (MLB.com; USA Today). Ortiz said after the game that he should make that play “every (expletive) time,” USA Today reports (USA Today).
Game 5 takes place Wednesday, Oct. 28, at Tropicana Field, with first pitch listed by MLB.com at 8 p.m. ET (5 p.m. PT) on Fox (MLB.com). Brewers manager Pat Murphy confirmed that Jacob Misiorowski will start, USA Today reports, and said the right-hander never figured as a relief option in Game 4: “You can't blow that type of situation on a one-run lead on the road” (USA Today). MLB.com’s preview notes that the Rays used every pitcher from their regular-season rotation in the past four nights and calls a bullpen game their best, and perhaps only, option; if Tampa Bay wins, the series returns to Milwaukee for Game 6 on Friday, Oct. 30, and, if needed, Game 7 on Saturday, Oct. 31 (MLB.com; USA Today). MLB.com adds that the Rays lost Game 5 in both of their earlier World Series trips, in 2008 and 2020 (MLB.com). This desk read the coverage between about 1 and 1:30 a.m. PT Wednesday.
