Volkswagen, Europe’s largest carmaker, reported on Thursday, Oct. 29, an after-tax loss of €5.822 billion for the third quarter of 2026, according to the group’s results release from Wolfsburg (Volkswagen Group); Euronews puts the loss at about $6.5 billion (Euronews). A year earlier the group lost €1.072 billion in the same three months. The release, published early Thursday in Germany (late Wednesday night PT), carries the headline “Nine-month results underline urgent need for action” (Volkswagen Group).
The operating result for July through September came to minus €5.86 billion, against minus €1.299 billion a year earlier, for an operating return on sales of minus 7.8%, the release shows (Volkswagen Group). Reuters, citing Visible Alpha, reports that analysts had forecast an operating loss of €2.6 billion, and that sales revenue fell by a “stronger-than-forecast” 6% (Reuters). Revenue reached €75.277 billion, down 6.3% from €80.305 billion, according to Volkswagen (Volkswagen Group). Reuters reported that Volkswagen shares looked set to open 1.1% lower in pre-market trading (Reuters).
Volkswagen attributes most of the damage to special items: €7.8 billion of them landed in the third quarter, out of €8.7 billion for the first nine months (Volkswagen Group). The largest, a non-cash impairment on Porsche goodwill, came to €6.4 billion; the group also lists non-cash impairments of around €1 billion on assets of fully consolidated companies in China and added costs tied to the planned sale of Volkswagen Osnabrück GmbH (Volkswagen Group). The dpa news agency, in a report carried by Handelsblatt, links the Porsche write-down to lower expectations for the sports-car maker’s future (dpa via Handelsblatt). Reuters notes that Volkswagen flagged €10 billion in one-off costs last month, mostly tied to Porsche (Reuters).
Beyond those items, the company points to a weak market in China, rising global price and competitive pressure, and a higher share of lower-margin electric vehicles in its sales (Volkswagen Group). Deliveries to customers fell 14.3% in the quarter to 1.885 million vehicles, from 2.199 million, and production fell 15.9% to 1.786 million, the release shows (Volkswagen Group). In China, dpa reports, the group sold almost 406,000 vehicles in the quarter, down 38.5% (dpa via Handelsblatt).
Chief financial officer Arno Antlitz said in the release, “The nine-month results make one thing clear: We cannot afford to lose any time and must act quickly and decisively.” He added that “US tariffs weigh on us” and that “we currently earn less from electric vehicles than from combustion-engine vehicles” (Volkswagen Group). Antlitz put the nine-month operating return on sales before special items at 3.8% and said, “That is too low to continue investing strongly in our future” (Volkswagen Group). In a video statement quoted by Reuters, he said, “That is not enough in the long term” (Reuters).
For the first nine months, Volkswagen reports revenue of €233.4 billion, down from €238.7 billion, and an operating result of just €71 million, against €5.4 billion a year earlier (Volkswagen Group). Before special items, the nine-month operating result reached €8.8 billion. Net cash flow in the automotive division rose to €4.4 billion from €1.8 billion, helped by lower investment and portfolio measures, and net liquidity stood at €33.0 billion on Sept. 30, the company says (Volkswagen Group). The group counted 648,100 employees at the end of September, down 2.2% from 662,900 at the end of 2025 (Volkswagen Group).
The brand groups diverged. The Core group, which includes the Volkswagen brand and Škoda, posted a nine-month operating result of €4.3 billion, down from €4.7 billion, with Škoda’s strength offsetting a weak Volkswagen brand; the release also cites restructuring costs and the already completed end of ID.4 production in the United States (Volkswagen Group). The Progressive brand group saw its operating result drop 26% to €1.2 billion. Porsche generated €22.1 billion in revenue and an operating result of €1.5 billion, and the Traton truck business raised order intake 25% to 253,100 vehicles (Volkswagen Group).
Some numbers moved the other way. Order intake in Europe rose 4% to 3.0 million vehicles in the first nine months, orders for battery-electric vehicles rose 39%, and electric vehicles made up about 40% of a European order bank of around 1.1 million vehicles, according to Volkswagen (Volkswagen Group). The company says it has received around 150,000 orders for its Electric Urban Car Family (Volkswagen Group).
Volkswagen left its full-year outlook in place: around €315 billion in revenue and an operating return on sales of up to 1% (Volkswagen Group). dpa reports that the group cut that margin target in mid-September from a range of 4.0% to 5.5%, and that its operating margin for 2025 came to 2.8% (dpa via Handelsblatt). The release says the forecast assumes no change in the current tariff situation and leaves out any effect of an escalation in the Middle East, which the company says it “still cannot” reliably assess (Volkswagen Group).
The loss raises the stakes for a restructuring already under way. Antlitz describes a “Future Plan” with a cost program of around €31 billion, built on a streamlined model range, simpler structures and greater plant efficiency (Volkswagen Group). Reuters reports that chief executive Oliver Blume plans 100,000 job cuts across the group and that up to four plants in Germany face closure under his plan, which unions oppose, with possible strikes from early next year (Reuters). Euronews gives a different job figure, 120,000 cuts by 2030 (Euronews). This desk covered Audi’s plan for a first U.S. plant on Oct. 25 (Seems News, Audi in Georgia).
